"Pearline Hardy of Newport News has ridden the bus to Atlantic City, N.J., every other week for 11 years. Greeted by the beeping, chirping, chiming and flashing of hundreds of slot machines, she heads right to her sweet spot — the penny slots.

"On this particular Sunday morning, she's back in her bus seat wrapped in a blanket and about $180 richer. Not long ago, she won $900, and once she brought home a cool $1,200.
